It was a battle of the sexes like never before for the American Idol 2012 Top 13 tonight. As we’ve learned, the bottom guy and the bottom girl will be up for elimination based on the judges’ decisions.
That leaves us with a question about the American Idol judges’ save that has been a big part of the show the past couple seasons. Will that return next week after they get past this stunt that is clearly a plot to eliminate a guy right away? It’s anyone’s guess.
On to the recap. As always, I’ll review each performance and assign the letter grades I think each deserved.
In order of performance:
Joshua Ledet, “I Wish.” Joshua is totally a natural. He was right in his comfort zone with this song. And even though he got a little screechy, he still had a very solid performance. His energy and presence were as strong as his vocals. A
Elise Testone, “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” I wish I understood why she didn’t make this song more her own. There was a slight blues-y spin on, but it wasn’t in her comfort zone at all. And that’s sad. I really don’t want her to go home anytime soon because she has the most interesting voice among the girls. C+
Jermaine Jones, “Knocks Me Off My Feet.” Well that was pretty boring. I heard a little bit of a range in his performance tonight so I know it’s not all ultra low. But that seems to be where he stays — waaaaaay down there. And I’m not a fan of it. We all like the kind of music we like and sometimes there’s no budging. I think Jermaine is never going to be able to break through with me. Luckily I don’t count. Ha. C-
Erika Van Pelt, “I Believe In You And Me.” Ugh. why did she pick this song? A lot of people are picked the wrong songs tonight, but this was one of the biggest mistakes. She’s a rocker and this song is a powerhouse song. This is the kind of song Jennifer Hudson sings, not Erika Van Pelt. She’s a great singer, but I just don’t think she could pull this off. C
Colton Dixon, “Lately.” Colton had a boring start but when it took off it really took off. He seriously went from a C to an A in a matter of seconds. A
Shannon Magrane, “I Have Nothing.” I didn’t think this performance was ALL bad. I even wrote in my notes that “this girl can f***ing sing.” But then she blew that money note and was never able to recover. I think the judges unfairly focused on the bad. But hey, that’s how it goes. D+
Deandre Brackensick, “Master Blaster.” Eh. A little too Reggae for me. Deandre is a great singer and performer, but he made a very bad song choice tonight. He already didn’t make it into the Top 13 based on America’s votes, so he had to really sell it tonight to get some votes and I don’t think he did. C+
Skylar Laine, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” Skylar did things tonight that I didn’t know she could do! I thought she was perfectly fine as a little country girl with a raw, classic-country sound. Then she belted out this song? I was like, whaaaat? I don’t even like country but I found myself really rooting for Skylar tonight. Nice. A+
Heejun Han, “All in Love is Fair.” Heejun gave us a softer side tonight and while it was a perfectly fine vocal, it wasn’t very exciting. If there’s a definition of a safe performance this was it. B+
Hollie Cavanagh, “All The Man That I Need.” Her performance was perfect. Literally perfect. There’s really nothing else I can say about it. A+
Jeremy Rosado, “Ribbon in the Sky.” Much like Deandre, Jeremy has a lot to prove. And just like Deandre, he didn’t deliver. Sure Jeremy is sweet and a great singer, but he didn’t do what he needed to do tonight. He’s at great risk tomorrow night. B-
Jessica Sanchez, “I Will Always Love You.” I knew someone had to sing the song. I just didn’t want it done in the style of Whitney. But Jessica changed my mind. And there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t been said. It was amazing. I think Hollie was still a little more perfect, but Jessica might have out-edged her with some emotion. A+
Phillip Phillips, “Superstition.” PP in the pimp spot! I felt like I was at a Phillip Phillips concert. He’s such a natural and it’s all so effortless that I’m not sure he could suck if he tried. I like that his voice is one of the most unique in the contest. Like Jimmy Iovine said, he’s a great musician AND a great vocalist. Which has been rare on American Idol in 11 seasons.
So how’s it all going to play out tomorrow night? Well, this is what I think could happen. And as always, this is what I think COULD happen based ONLY on how I think America might vote. These are not who I think should go home. At all.
100 Percent Safe: Jessica Sanchez, Hollie Cavanagh, Phillip Phillips, Heejun Han, Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet, Skylar Laine.
Most Likely Safe: Shannon Magrane, Elise Teston, Deandre Brackensick and Jermaine Jones.
Most Likely the Bottom Guy: Jeremy Rosado
Most Likely The Bottom Girl: Erika Van Pelt
Most Likely the Judge’s Elimination: Jeremy
Why? Because if they actually have the choice, there’s NO WAY they’re going to send a girl home. Since it normally takes weeks for a guy to be sent packing, I’m about 100 percent sure the producers will force them to pick the guy. No matter who it is. Jeremy could easily be replaced with Jermaine or Deandre, and Erika easily replaces with Elise, I think. But I have a stronger feeling with my first thoughts.

I think the standouts were Hollie, Jessica, and Skylar. Skylar became a true front runner tonight. And Hollie attracted a whole lot of attention. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s results show!!!

No real reason for Jermaine to be in trouble after that performance. I get it–he’s really different than the cookie cutter molded product some folks are happy with. Personally, I think if people get over their prejudices (and I do not mean “racial” here) of what they are not used to, this guy will surprise everyone as he grows during this show. He has a lot more he can do and will do, given the chance.
Same with Erika–she did great tonight. Jessica is fine and very polished but does not really have a stand out voice–yes she can sing very well and hits all the notes, etc. But nothing unique in the timbre of her voice.

I’m not prejudice in regard to jermaines voice. Its just boring and so is he. Don’t people see that he is going to sound the same every week. Now erica von pelt is great. She has a different low voice, but its beautiful and exciting. Its like she hasn’t shown us all she can do yet and keeps teasing us. Jermaine has the spot that reed grimm should be in
Erika sometimes has breathing controls, yeah, I get it her voice is raw and has a unique timbre, but I think Jessica was more than fine, and hands-down waay better than Erika. Stage presence- check, Vocal control – check, Emotion – check, Voice quality – check. But I have to admit her timbre was not shown to full advantage… During her group # with Candice and Deandre though, I’d say her voice had enough edge to rival that of Erika’s…
Definitely agree with you on Jermaine…I feel he does have a lot to offer as the competition proceeds. Not sure on your take of Jessica…she sang Whitney’s song flawlessly…I am hoping not but she may be another Pia Toscano…has the voice but really can’t bring the showmanship to it. Who knows~???

I agree that it should be a female winner this year and the girls are definitely stronger than the guys this year, but next week it goes back to the old format of the contestant with the lowest votes leaves so who knows how the teen girls will vote. If it were who gets the lowest votes this week I’d say the bottom three would be Jermaine, Shannon, and Erika with Jermaine going home as his performance was just ugh who cares, and sometimes those are kind of worse to have than the bad ones where the singer was at least trying. So in my prediction it is a guy going home.

Why? If a guy deserves to win then so be it. Personally if any of the girls win they won’t really take off on the charts. Whereas some of the guy have the x factor when it comes to marketability, voice, charisma and just natural talent. Go Guys!
Totally agree with the marketability (relevant talent) of the guys vs. the girls. Now, I was all set to dislike Jessica’s performance last night – but it was pretty perfect, and Hollie’s as well. But if I’m going to continue to watch Idol to check out new artists, they need to move past the ballad-singers. I’m pretty much as excited by Phillip Phillips as I was by Adam Lambert. (Colton D is pretty cool also.) Most of the others – I’d never buy their records or pay to see them perform. And while Heejun makes me a little nervous that he’s not going to pull it off, I do love the guy’s personality.
And I REALLY hope that, just because a girl hasn’t won Idol in awhile – they don’t push them through to the end. This is TALENT, folks. Not a gender competition.

I truly didn’t find one performance “Horrible” tonight, and part of that is because I feel like SOME of the contestants are holding back and not singing to their full potential. I want them to sing like it’s the finale! Sing like you mean it! But, the top guy/girl who sang the best tonight was Jessica and Joshua, they both stood out and sang like they were there to win the competition. The worst guy/girl tonight was Shannon and Jeremy, Jeremy wasn’t necessarily the worst sounding guy, but, I just find him to be completely bland/boring.. Shannon, I have so much faith in this girl and I didn’t find her performance to be as bad as people made it out to be, the girl is only 16 and she did ok singing a WHITNEY song, cut her some slack. But, I will admit she was slightly the worst amongst the girls..

I think it’s just because it’s the beginning and they aren’t really comfortable yet. I bet tonight it will be a whole new story. Stepping into Whitney’s shoes is something I wouldn’t want to do. I would have had problems signing her song. I would have been so intimidated.
OMG! God sent her spirit back to us. We just saw Whitney’s Angel! Jessicia Sanchez just HIT it. Now here’s the question: Where can she go from here? Whitney couldn’t even out do her own song, so to me it doesn’t matter what she sings it’s a done deal. If you could sing I will always love you by Whitney Houston flawlessly like she did you are guaranteed a deal. Clive Davis is probably scrambling to contract her! LOL!

I absolutely love Jessica, and the girl can sing her ass off! But, did anyone else think it was unfair how she got to sing “I Will Always Love You”? That’s Whitney’s most powerful song, I feel like that song shouldn’t have been sung by anyone because of it’s popularity. That right there lt alone gave Jessica an advantage. And the way her stage looked while performing made her look way more superior then any of the other girls, she had the spotlight on her, with the smokey stage, wind blowing , they made her stage presence look like she already won idol!

I have a feeling that like last week that two of the girls could have chosen the same song. But what girl other than maybe Hollie is going to go head to head with Jessica on the same song??? Especially since Jessica has a history of kicking butt with that very song just youtube it. My guess is that multiple girls did want to sing it but then when they saw Jessica was also singing it they changed their minds and who would blame them.
lets not forget that Pia is an awesome singer as well, and was propped up for all to vote for. However; that did not happen in the end, did it? It’s about voice sure, but; personality and entertainment value plays a huge role as does the “underdog” status. Vote your favorite and lets see what happens.

It was a night of tribute to the late Whitney Houston! And somebody really had to sing that song because as you said, it was his biggest hit. The night will never be complete if that song wasn’t sang! And, I believe no one could do it better than Jessica.

I would have rather heard Skylar’s sing “I Will Always Love You.”. She would have blown away Dolly’s version of this song and the original song was sung by a country artist. Jessica did that song justice, but what happened to making songs their own. I don’t watch Idol to see televised karaoke.

I think that Skyler clearly has an advantage in this competition as the only country singer.Historically, the american voters choose their favorites by genre ( Scottie ) I agree that Dolly Parton does not get enough credit for writing one of the most beautiful and powerful songs ever written.
Guess producers manipulating some things again. They do it every so often only to find themselves failing versus the general taste of viewers.
I think it wasn’t unfair she got to sing that song. On the contrary, it would have been a big gamble. To sing a very famous song by Whitney, is a lot of pressure. You’ve heard it countless times in Idol when the judges keep telling contestants they shouldn’t have taken on BIG songs they can’t deliver. Personally, I’d have preferred Jessica to sing I Have Nothing, it’s more emotionally charged I think than I Will Always Love You, but as you can see, Shannon didn’t deliver. So really it’s not in the song, it’s in the singer. And Jessica is just THAT GOOD.
Considering how critical most people are of anyone singing this song (not in Whitney’s league, etc.) – it was totally fair. She took a chance – she might have tanked – in the judge’s eyes anyway and then where would she be? Admittedly, she hasn’t endeared herself to me for some reason – but she really soared last night. And don’t the contestants have input on their accompaniment and stage set up? I would imagine all the others could have requested a fan blowing if they’d wanted.

There are three powerhouse girls, so far Jessica is on top, then Hollie, then Shannon. Honestly Shannon will probably make it as far as top 11 or top 10, and then drop off because of powerhouse vote split, then Hollie will drop off around top 5 or 6 or maybe Jessica if Hollie proves better, and Jessica will make it to top 2 or 3. That is of now, I don’t think it’s likely more than one powerhouse girl will make the top 3.
For guys Jermaine, Jeremy, and probably DeAndre will be the first ones to go or basically be the filler guys.
Filler girls are looking like Erika, and possibly Shannon.
Rocker/Teen bait guys, Phillip and Colton, one will come out on top and one will be sent home in the middle of the competition. So far it looks like Phillip will stick it out over Colton, could change.
Elise and Skylar are both unique and will last fairly long, I expect at least one of them (most likely Skylar) to make the top 4/3 with a powerhouse girl.
Soul guys, Heejun and Joshua, this one is tricky because Joshua can sing, and Heejun is a big favorite of a lot of people. Joshua could easily turn ouut like Jacob Lusk if he’s not careful and just get annoying, and Heejun could get boring if he keeps singing ballads. It is to early to call that one, but I will anyways and say as of now Heejun gets that one.

Phillip Phillips is the biggest Dave Matthews rip off I have ever heard. Everyone keeps saying how original he is but he just rips off every move Dave Matthews has, down to the leg twitch. Ick I hate rip off’s!!!!

Like I said, Jeremy isn’t the worst guy singer, but he’s to boring and I don’t see him having star quality.. Shannon better stay tomorrow, and I am so looking forward for her to redeem herself. Her voice is to good to only be 16, she can’t get cut. Right now, she’s the underdog and next week I want her to sleigh whatever song she sings. #TeamShannon
I know Shannon had a rough ending to her song tonight, but I think she is fantastic. I hope she makes it through, because I think she has a LOT of potential. But Jessica and Hollie were definitely the top 2.

I Think THE ENTIRE SHOW is behind Jessica and she is overestimated. And I see nothing in Jessica performance that HOLLIE can’t do. Absolutely JESSICA Has one of the most powerful voice in Idol but they give her best song (overall among boys and guys). I prefer Hollie (among girls) and Phillip (Overall). In my opinion Hollie is better singer and has more personality.
HATE ME but Jessica will be NEW SCOTTY and everyone will be nice to her (I’m a Scotty fan!!!) and she absolutely set the bar high and I think she will disappoint us very soon.

Both ladies did a fantastic job last night! The song Jessica did involves a lot of “Risks” that’s why I believe no one else’s wanted to do it but her.
Just imagine this, one sour note , one slip , one tiny off pitch line we will
catch it, the judges will nail her for it and lecture her for attempting such a big song like others in the past. It takes skill, practice , a great voice to even come close to how Whitney sang that song, and my ears told me Jessica nailed that song, now to make it clear to you I am not a Jessica fan myself, though I really, really like her a lot and I believe she can win this as long as she remains consistent.

OK…I don’t know if maybe you were watching a different show or what, but I seriously have to question your ability to judge real talent when it came to your assessment of Erika Van Pelt’s song choice and performance tonight. Good grief! Just because you think she should have picked a song that you like does not mean that she didn’t sing great. Sorry, but after I watched it, I honestly had to wonder if we were watching the same show! And you could see that the audience dug it. I’d give her at least a B+ or higher. No offense, but I just had to get that out there.

I don’t get PP. I thought it was his worst performance so far…that wasn’t singing, that was screaming. Can he sing/scream without the guitar? Shannon’s a better singer than that, so I hope she can come back strong. And that was the most soulful version of “I’m Your Baby Tonight” sung by Elise…do you think Adele could pull this off? Everyone else was fine…tough choices all around. No question Jessica was the standout, but Skylar was a nice surprise tonight
Jermaine Jones should go home! He was awful! Definitely the worst of the night. Even Jeremy was better than Jermaine.
The best three performers: Hollie, Jessica and Skylar were all three incredible.
The closest guy was Joshua and I have him at the #4 performer of the night.
Phil Phillips I have at #5 overall.
The others are picking up scraps.
Tonight’s show was great! Jessica really stood out. I’m just afraid that having outstanding performances at the start of the show may be disadvantage to her because it would set the bar high for herself. Her song choice tonight was very risky, either u do well or not. Luckily, She did fantastic.
jessica did well on that song. i did not know that, that song is a big song. i just knew here. Not to brag, but here in our country if your a singer you are considered to be, or can do witney songs. kids here can sing that song. like charice and jessica. when they’re kids they sing that song all the time.
The waves of the song and the voice of Whitney H is unforgettable. The song might be ordinary to u an dur country but no one does it better than the singer itself. I am so amazed that Jessica gave justice to the song but i hope Jessica will sing next time in her own style. She is really versatile and can change her styles so quicky.It is her talent.

Like I said earlier, they could’nt have picked a harder theme song than Whitney and Stevie songs for these group of singers. So few in my opinion was even close to competition form. And Just as I expected it did help in determining who are the better singers tonight. I was dissapointed that one of the two ladies that I like could be sent home and one guy that I am hoping could improve in a hurry , did not. Too bad he has a voice that has a lot of texture but he doesn’t seem to know how to take advantage of it and or not familiar with tonite’s theme songs.

Joshua,Colton, Philip Jessica and Hollie were strong tonite in my opinion and they sang as if it was their last, so they did a great job.
What bothers me with theme songs is it is very difficult to bring out the true
style of each and every singer when they are singing someone else’s songs especially a Stevie Wonder or a Whitney Houston signature song. I do understand why but still I much prefer to hear new material and or their own compositions to showcase who they will become as an artist and America’s Idol, but that will be too easy would’nt it??
Case in point , Elise & Shannon could have done many times better if they were alowed to sing a song of their choice instead of a Whitney song, that goes for all of them since these songs were made before they were born and they may not have any emotional attachment to the songs, unlike myself where these songs tonite brought me back in time. Feelings are feelings and in order to bring it out the song has to have some kind of emotional relevance to make it believable. Just saying………
So few were even close to competition form. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Just not much standing out. I don’t disagree with your possible bottom people either, but I personally hope it’s not Shannon or DeAndre.

This is the first top 13 competition and already Randy Jackson has picked the winner of Idol 2012. Why do judges do that to contestants? As soon as someone is “picked as the potential winner” either people jump on their bandwagon so they can say they were for the winner or they vote for someone else because they like to root for the underdog. The judges should judge each contestant after his or her performance and let the decision of who was best or worst of the night up to the viewers. Judges’ picking the winner bothers me more than flat or sharp notes, missed notes, or missed lyrics. When Ryan puts them on the spot, the judges should refuse to comment and say it’s up to the viewers.
I have to agree with you, Giselle. I think morale of other contestants would be affected too. It is way to early to call the shots.
Last season, they’ve almost made it clear that they wanted Pia, James and Casey up there. But none of these talented folks made it to even top 3. Relevance as an artist will play a huge role.
I totally agree with you. The judges blow it every season as far back as the two Davids. When they start to predict a winner the voters turn on them. They should judge thats it……no comments as far as in it to win it/or its a girls year, etc…….Shout Up Please!!!!!!
Agreed. It is way too early for the judges to start picking and choosing winners…unfair to the other contestants…in the past, when the judges start “pimping” too early, it usually does not make for a happy ending for that particular contestant. Hi Phyllis, dear friend~!!!
If a guy has to go home, I just prefer it be Jermaine. But Jeremy is fine too, even Heejun would probably be okay(only reason is he won’t go anywhere he hasn’t already in my opinion). I’m not done with the others though. As for a girl, Elise or Erika would be my preference for the bottom, but I could see it being Shannon.

Unfortunately for Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez is in the same competition. I’m not sure how two others get an A+ along with her. If Jessica gets an A+, then the next best grade has to be maybe an A-. When I first heard of Jessica this year, I immediately disliked her because too many people compared her to Thia Megia (and I am a huge Thia fan…I’m not sure why they have been compared…other than a similar singing history and video of them in a trio at a young age, they have nothing in common…two very different styles). But anyway, after the past few weeks, I am totally sold on Jessica. She may as well stop the competition now and go get her record deal. She is going places.
in AI history, no two great/front runner contestants go into the finals with the exception of the two Davids ( season 7). Great Singers usually booted out of the show before the finale!

It’s simple-Hollie and Philip. Jessica may have sung a signature song by the iconic Diva, but Hollie knocked it out of the ball park! Philip is a true natural and stands out all on his own, therefore there should be another first and have two American Idols, one male and one female. Race has nothing to do with nothing, it’s all about talent!
It’s all about talent you said which obviously Jessica has. J San just slayed the song. There’s just some songs that needs no re-arranging and “I Will Always Love You” is one of those songs. It’s either you come close or you crash and burn. Jessica could be the one. But hey, who knows? I hope she puts an end to the idol curse – WGWG – if you know what I mean. Can we just have someone crowned like Kelly or Carrie. It’s been awhile.
I think the top female singers are Jessica, Skylar ,& Hollie they will battle for the title. The males i feel will be Joshua and Colton, could be wrong too. As for Phillips he reminds me of James Durbin although I enjoyed most of Durbins music on Idol. We will have to wait, but I see the ladies battling for the tittle.

I disagree. She has a nasty nasal tone and, while forceful, no real melodious quality to her voice.
For 3 consecutive standing ovations from the judges themselves, it is very obvious that the show has found a new great singing idol and that’s JESSICA SANCHEZ. She just made Philippines and Mexico so proudly anticipating for her next knockout performance of the season 11.
I find myself going back to watch the same 4 performances:
1. & 2. = Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh ( I think they are both on the same level for me. Jessica showcased her voice more tonight, but Hollie hitting that one high note was a killer moment as well.)
3. = Deandre Brackensick (I know the majority of you will disagree with me on this one, but I feel the kid has mad SWAG and he showed it tonight. There’s no denying he has unbelievable range, but he chose the right song tonight to give us another side. I loved Steven Tyler’s comment about ‘Jamaican Patois’, that’s the island vibe that all of us islanders have in our blood, it doesn’t matter if you’re from the Caribbean, Pacific Islands or even South-East Asian island nations, there’s a definite rhythm in the way islanders move.)
4. = Philipps 2X (There’s something mysterious and moody about this guy, which is always the combination for the female votes. His performance was like a real concert, to the point where I felt like he should have had a full band behind him with drummer and all. His roar is becoming a signature for him.)
There are 2 other performances who I thought stood out enough tonight:
1. = Colton Dixon (The vulnerable teenage heartthrob look is working for this kid. I’ve been a fan of his since last season, but I think he still has a lot to prove to show he really belongs. But if he keeps doing what he’s doing I can see him going far. I don’t why everyone is calling him a rocker, though, I personally don’t see him that way, and I wonder if he does as well. He’s more Emo/Indie/Alternative. And his hairstyle is the hottest trend for guys in Asia right now, and I live in Taiwan at the moment, so it doesn’t look all that out of place to me.)
2. = Skylar Laine (I consider myself a moderate country fan, I like contemporary artists like Rascall Flatts, Dixie Chicks & Tim McGraw as well as classics like Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, so I liked Skylar from the start. When she hits those highs she grabs you for good! And I’m glad I love her so much this season, because I couldn’t get into Scottie or Lauren last season, which made me doubt how much I really was into country. THis girl brought me back!)
guys do u remember ashley robles who sang that song “i will always love you” in her audition? when you listen to her, its just so amazing. by the way, she and jessica had the same filipino blood. just a trivia.

As much as I agree with many of the posters here, I have to question which of the contestants seem relevant in today’s music scene. I really like this season’s batch of contestants and it has me alot more excited than the last couple of seasons. But, why oh why do they make them cover Stevie Wonder songs 2 seasons in a row? Don’t get me wrong, Stevie Wonder is a legend, but so outdated in today’s music scene. I get the tribute to Whitney, and many of her songs are still modern and known to younger audiences. If I think America will vote correctly, I think the bottom 4 will be:
Jeremy, Shannon, Jeremiah, and either Elise or Erika
Deserves to go home: Shannon and Jeremy
Sorry, Shannon has a good voice, but can she sing anything other than a ballad? Jeremy, just to blah?
If you take away I-will-always-love-you persona from Jessica performance, I think Hollie did as good, if not better, as Jessica.
Bottom spot for girl would be either Shannon or Erika. but that doesn’t matter coz the guy landed in bottom spot will go home tomorrow. from the beginning of the season they kinda plot it’ll be girl’s season (they sent home good ones from the boys home; David, Reed, Johnny).
So tomorrow I think the ones given second chance will go home (again) : Jeremy, Jermaine or Deandre. My money’s on Jermaine though…

It is so obvious that the producers want a female winner this year. Jennifer is already making comments to that effect – “two girls in the finals!” However, this has happened before and backfired. The 3 best? Philip (in a league all by himself). Colton (the night’s best performance) and Ms. Sanchez (but tired of hearing that song over and over…). Oh – the judges will definitely send a guy home since that is what the producers will make them do. A shameful situation!

Based on tonight’s performance alone, Shannon would be eliminated. Simply because, even if the judges didn’t comment on the bad points, she definitely didn’t hold it up when she stumbled. Even with the nice ending, it couldn’t cover the obvious mistake.

The girls outperformed the guys. This should be a girls’ year, but we’ve seen this too much in the past that the girls don’t make it for wahtever stupid reason. Final three, (never mind the final two) should be Hollie, Jesssica, Skylar. Final two could be either of them.
As for last night’s show bottom three most likely guys would be Deandre, Jeremy and Elise. But remember this is AI and we’ve seen great talent get knocked out early before.
The “stupid reason” is Nigel’s refusal to limit the voting. Teens with cell phones are in control of the results.

I just replayed a few of the performances…and i know I am baised but Phil was amazing…i know jessica nailed her performance….but it was the exact arrangement whitney used…but jessica sounded almost exactly like her…but if you were going to download one of them for a price you would probably download whitney…but with Phil……that song was his..he is nice to watch but also unique in sound…I am not sure Phil will win but he is so far the only one I would spend money on…I think it is the Phillip Phillips show…who will be his guests next week?

Joshua Ledet, “I Wish.” Joshua is totally a natural. He was right in his comfort zone with this song. And even though he got a little screechy, he still had a very solid performance. His energy and presence were as strong as his vocals. A
Elise Testone, “I’m Your Baby Tonight.” I wish I understood why she didn’t make this song more her own. There was a slight blues-y spin on, but it wasn’t in her comfort zone at all. And that’s sad. I really don’t want her to go home anytime soon because she has the most interesting voice among the girls. C+
Jermaine Jones, “Knocks Me Off My Feet.” Well that was pretty boring. I heard a little bit of a range in his performance tonight so I know it’s not all ultra low. But that seems to be where he stays — waaaaaay down there. And I’m not a fan of it. We all like the kind of music we like and sometimes there’s no budging. I think Jermaine is never going to be able to break through with me. Luckily I don’t count. Ha. C-
Erika Van Pelt, “I Believe In You And Me.” Ugh. why did she pick this song? A lot of people are picked the wrong songs tonight, but this was one of the biggest mistakes. She’s a rocker and this song is a powerhouse song. This is the kind of song Jennifer Hudson sings, not Erika Van Pelt. She’s a great singer, but I just don’t think she could pull this off. C
Colton Dixon, “Lately.” Colton had a boring start but when it took off it really took off. He seriously went from a C to an A in a matter of seconds. A
Shannon Magrane, “I Have Nothing.” I didn’t think this performance was ALL bad. I even wrote in my notes that “this girl can f***ing sing.” But then she blew that money note and was never able to recover. I think the judges unfairly focused on the bad. But hey, that’s how it goes. D+
Deandre Brackensick, “Master Blaster.” Eh. A little too Reggae for me. Deandre is a great singer and performer, but he made a very bad song choice tonight. He already didn’t make it into the Top 13 based on America’s votes, so he had to really sell it tonight to get some votes and I don’t think he did. C+
Skylar Laine, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” Skylar did things tonight that I didn’t know she could do! I thought she was perfectly fine as a little country girl with a raw, classic-country sound. Then she belted out this song? I was like, whaaaat? I don’t even like country but I found myself really rooting for Skylar tonight. Nice. A+
Heejun Han, “All in Love is Fair.” Heejun gave us a softer side tonight and while it was a perfectly fine vocal, it wasn’t very exciting. If there’s a definition of a safe performance this was it. B+
Hollie Cavanagh, “All The Man That I Need.” Her performance was perfect. Literally perfect. There’s really nothing else I can say about it. A+
Jeremy Rosado, “Ribbon in the Sky.” Much like Deandre, Jeremy has a lot to prove. And just like Deandre, he didn’t deliver. Sure Jeremy is sweet and a great singer, but he didn’t do what he needed to do tonight. He’s at great risk tomorrow night. B-
Jessica Sanchez, “I Will Always Love You.” I knew someone had to sing the song. I just didn’t want it done in the style of Whitney. But Jessica changed my mind. And there’s nothing I can say that hasn’t been said. It was amazing. I think Hollie was still a little more perfect, but Jessica might have out-edged her with some emotion. A+
Phillip Phillips, “Superstition.” PP in the pimp spot! I felt like I was at a Phillip Phillips concert. He’s such a natural and it’s all so effortless that I’m not sure he could suck if he tried. I like that his voice is one of the most unique in the contest. Like Jimmy Iovine said, he’s a great musician AND a great vocalist. Which has been rare on American Idol in 11 seasons.
So how’s it all going to play out tomorrow night? Well, this is what I think could happen. And as always, this is what I think COULD happen based ONLY on how I think America might vote. These are not who I think should go home. At all.

Jessica was off key in several places in the first minute. Also: no originality, and way excessive vibrato. All this was pretty obvious, so don’t know why the judges raved. Grade: C

This is a 3 horse race for me between Jessica, Hollie and Phillip . Given that the “scream teens” are the ones that usually decide this show, Phillip is probably in the catbird seat but I would love to see it come down to the 2 girls.
I love Shannon’s personality, and give her a lot of credit for how she took her critique from the judges. She’s very likeable, and I think she has a pretty voice, but it’s mediocre to me.

I can’t wait for Hollie to sing out of her comfort zone and show people how versatile she is, like Skylar. In her top 42 performance, she sang “Change” by Carrie Underwood. I had no idea that this was a country song until I looked it up. Guess what? Hollie did it better, much better. Her voice is strong and timeless. I’m interested to see if Jessica can be as versatile as Hollie. As of yet, I haven’t seen it.
Obviously Jessica has an amazing voice and her vibrato and performance is almost perfect. She has an amazing way of sounding almost just like artist she’s performing. I just want to see her make, let’s say, a country song her own!
She is verstile more than Hollie . She sang ” Get Me Bodied ” and Some ballads . Just to be fair in your judgement , Chuck out her videos on Youtube and I am sure u will change ur mind.
Like I said, I’m not undermining Jessica’s talent. She’s amazing. But “Get Me Bodied” is a Beyonce song and Jessica reminds me most of Beyonce! I’ll have to youtube her more to make any more assertions. She can showcase herself with the “great black female singers songs”. I’d just like to see her do something way different and make it her complete own, like Hollie did for “Change”. Youtube the one by Carrie and youtube Hollie’s clip…you’ll see what I’m saying too!

I wouldn’t really call her a robot. You can really feel her vibe and emotion when she sings, which is impressive for a 16-year-old. I used to dislike her, but now I’m sold. I wouldn’t say she’s the greatest with regard to the quality of her tone, but she makes up for it in all other areas. Like Randy said, she’s legit.

I do not understand why everyone is so sure a guy has to go home. If Shannon gets outperformed (she was horrible last night) by either Jeremy, Jermaine or Hajeen (I think he was good but his song will not get him many votes) then goodbye shannon .
I’m sorry but Shannon Magrane did horrible last night. I’ve loved her up to this point and she takes criticism very well for sure, but her performance was inexcusable to me. She failed to hit every single high note she aimed for and it just worse and worse throughout the performance. Philip and DeAndre are the most original musicians on the show. I love to see what they will do each week and they will definitely go far in this competition. As for the rest of the ladies, Elise, Skylar, and Jessica are all awesome. Elise has such a unique voice, which I agree wasn’t showcased at all in her performance last night. Nevertheless, she is extremely talented and I’m totally rooting for her. Skylar has an amazing voice and I don’t even enjoy country music. She continues to surprise me with every performance. Jessica has a flawless voice. She is right up there with the Mariahs, Whitneys, and Celines and will only get better from here on out. I also love Erika but I did not enjoy her performance at all last night. She needs to use her powerful voice with a song that better shows her range. I hope America sees the talent she has and gives her another chance.
I see Jermaine with a cleaner & sexier appeal look! He looks sloppy! (No degradation intended here) I love his voice! But I don’t want to look at him! Deandre showed some flavor tonight!
I love how Hollie transformed from being the shy girl in Austin last season, to one heck of a vocalist right there. She has massive talent, but very unassuming. That Christina Aguilera/Celine Dion vibe is something that Ive been missing for awhile now. When you throw her in the field vs a bunch of singers today, you would still recognize her. She is that amaaaazing!
i agree with alot of the comments Jessica nailed it but alot of people thought Adam Lambert would be the next american idol but we all were fooled same for James Durbin it could change very quickly i also liked Hollie she may come out in front and dont rule out Jeremy he is a favorite of JLos
So glad Deandres stylists had him wear his hair up for his performance.I cannot stand the way he flips it around when he wears it down.One word for him …..PONYTAIL.

Joshua Ledet – I wish – I wasn’t expecting him
to pick this song, but I am happy that he did. This showed off his fun side,
and I think that he did a great job with it. His vocals were on point, and I
liked his aggressiveness on the song. (A-)

Elise Testone – I’m your baby tonight – I think
she could have had a better song choice. I love her voice, she has an amazing
tone. I think the judges were a little too harsh on her. I don’t think there
were timing issues. With a better song she could have been amazing. I blame
Jimmy more than her on this performance. I hope that she will be safe.
Personally, I think this was better than Haley’s version and Haley was my
absolute favorite last season. I think she did make it her own, and I really liked
parts of it. (B-)

Jermaine Jones – Knocks me off my feet – Yawn,
he bores me to death. I’m just not a fan of him. I guess for him, this was a
good performance. He was pitchy in some parts of this. He just isn’t my type of
artist. I know there are some people that like him, I’m just not one of them.

Erika Van Pelt – I believe in you and me – I loved
what she did with this song. I just thought she did a really solid job, and I
think she redeemed herself. I’m still waiting for her to amaze us. (B+)

Colton Dixon – Lately – I think that he did a
really good job. It was nice to see his softer side. I really like the softer
side to his voice. Overall he impressed me tonight. (B+)
6.
Shannon Magrane – I Have Nothing – Well I called
that. I knew she would have the hardest time out of any of the girls with this
theme. She has a good voice, but she doesn’t have a voice powerful enough to
pull off a Whitney song. There choruses were okay, but when she tried to hit
the big notes, it was really bad, and was really pitchy. I think she is in
trouble, and if she goes, then I’ll be okay with that. (D)
7.
DeAndre Brackensick – Master Blaster – For me
this was the most interesting performance of the night. And when I say
interesting, I mean it in a good way. I think in the chorus he got a little to
gritty with it. But, I think he did a really good job. His falsetto was also in
the right spots this time. Overall a good performance from him. (B)
8.
Skylar Laine – Where Do Broken Hearts Go – Wow!
She just made herself a contender with that song. I think that she started it
off well, and it just got better from there. I’m just really impressed with
her. I went back and listened and I didn’t hear what the judges were talking
about with her being nasally. (A)
9.
Heejun Han – All In Love Is Fair – I thought
that he did a really good job. He really brought the emotion to that
performance, and he has a really great tone to his voice. I agree with Randy,
it wasn’t perfect, but it was really good. (B)
10.
Hollie Cavanagh – All The Man That I Need – I think
that she did a really good job with this song. She has a big, strong powerful
voice, and I think she is in it for the long run. I think she could have went
even bigger with this song, so that’s why I’m giving her the grade that I did.

Jeremy Rosado – Ribbon In the Sky – Compared to
the other performances tonight, I just found this to be underwhelming. I think
that he has a good voice, but I also find him boring, and I think he was boring
tonight. (C)

Jessica Sanchez – I Will Always Love You – Well it
doesn’t get much better than that folks. Honestly she is one of the best, if
not the best singer to ever be on the idol stage, and she is only 16 years old.
She is going to be huge. I absolutely loved it. I can really hear Whitney and
Beyonce in her voice. I can’t wait to hear what she is going to do next. (A+)

Phillip Phillips – Superstition – I thought he
did a pretty good job with the song. I think he could have done better. I liked
parts of it, other parts I didn’t care for. (B-)
I’m glad to hear that the judges are going to actually judge
this year, even though I do think they were too hard on Elise tonight.
Overall, besides a few people performances, this was a
really great show. I think this top 13 is one of the most talented groups there
has even been on this show. There are a lot of really strong voices this year.
I think that Shannon Magrane is in trouble for the girls,
and Jeremy Rosado or Jermaine Jones for the boys. I don’t really care who goes
home out of those three. As long as Elise doesn’t go home, then I will be okay.
There is no doubt that Jessica Sanchez will go on to become the new 2012 American Idol. But she might be better off not winning because her career is going to take off from here with or without the help of American idol.

Skylar has had back to back fabulous performances. She has shown she is an all around performer. Keep on being who you are Skylar!

As I reviewed Jess and Hollie’s performance. I couldn’t help but to think that Jessica delivered a well-rounded performance. The emotion was there, confidence and she just flows. And she happens to have that three-note moment up to that last breath. Hollie has a powerful pipe but lacks emotion. She just singing and belting it out. Something’s lacking all I could say.

I want to get a message to Jermaine. As crazy as it may sound to him ( not sure of his full music exposure), but OPERA is where a glorious low voice like his would be glorified, used, adored.

I believe that Jesica could win it all. She did a wonderful job last night and I know that Whitney was smiling down at her. She was the best singer of all the episodes of every season of American Idol
